Proprietary asset allocation

For managed account portfolios, PIP utilizes proprietary asset allocation models based upon predetermined investment objectives and risk tolerance levels in the management of client assets.  These models incorporate both equity and fixed income securities for sector diversification. For equities, these sectors are further broken down by market capitalization and area of focus. For fixed income, these sectors are further broken down by maturity of issues, credit quality of the underlying and collateral backing the issue. The common theme of all the models is to generate favorable risk-adjusted returns.

Portfolio information

Our style for investment research is one taking a macro view of the investing environment, determining where we need to be and to what extent. From there, we incorporate fundamental and bottom-up analysis for investment selection. For portfolio construction, we incorporate our findings into our proprietary asset allocation models. Portfolio rebalancing and modifications are performed on macro, sector and an investment specific basis.

Our approach is to incorporate fundamental, bottom-up investment selection with the pillars of Modern Portfolio Theory seeking to create uniquely diversified, value-add asset allocation models that produce favorable risk adjusted returns to the investor.

Sell discipline

In determining the liquidation of a position in the portfolio, the following non-exclusive criteria will be used: Perceived Value (is the position still considered to be a value) – if there is no perceived value then the position will be liquidated; Overweight in the portfolio (due to price appreciation of the position or price deprecation of the other portfolio positions) – if the position has achieved an overweight position due to portfolio moves then the position will be modified to bring the position back into a more appropriate portfolio weighting; Sector Modification – if a current portfolio sector is in our view no longer providing a value-add to the portfolio then the sector and its components will be liquidated.
